Chapter Thirty-One: A Life on the Ocean Wave

A home on the rolling deep!

"Jack Kirkpatrick, formerly of The Miller Brewing Company, at yer service." Jack had a barrel chest, orange beard, red nose, and arms the size of thighs. "A'm pleased tae meet ye."

"Hi, Jack," Julie said, as she clawed through his Scottish brogue. "We've heard so much about you."

"Whit's yer name, lass?" he said with a broad smile that showed his cigar-stained teeth.

"It's Selene, sir."

"Hoo are ye?"

"Fine, sir."

"Hou auld ar ye?"

"Fifteen, sir."

"I hae tae gang, now. Guid night an sweit dreams!"

"What I nice man," Selene said to Julie. "I'm looking forward to this part of the trip at least."

Jack took a special liking to Selene and spent hours showing here how to carve whalebones and tie knots. After a while, they were able to talk so that neither of them noticed each other's accent. When he wasn't commanding the crew, Jack would climb the foremast and sing sea shanties in his baritone voice.
